Colin, lifelong friend and shipmate

Created by Michael 2 years ago

Myself and eddie Peach have known Colin for at least 50 years and we both worked with him at HMS Dryad.  Having built his own house ( the 1st one) he was the font of all knowledge for DIY and was regularly consulted by many colleages with their DIY problems. I had just bought a house and of course I made full use of his talents. He even went with me to buy my first tool kit, some items of which I still have. He also advised me on buying a car and one story I have to tell concerns that trip to buy tools in that very car.

After visiting Hoopers in Portsmouth we were returning to HMS DRYAD and I was doing about 60+ down the hill towards Southwick(just a bit late back from lunch!!) when Colin said " its's bit warm in here shall I open the sun roof?" the sun roof in my splendid new (to me) Triumph Herald was a fabric affair on runners which you slid back after releasing the catch.  Well Colin released the catch but unfortunately the frame came off the runners and it became a sail. Colin was lifted bodily from his seat (before seat belts were fitted) and was suspendend in mid air until I slowed down.

He said "well I didn't like to let go as it may have torn right off or scratched the roof". We often reminded each other of this story - the only Triumph Herald with a built in ejector seat !

Farewell Colin. Eddie and I will remember you every time we sail. How could we forget.
